OUR BAKERY

At Happy Dog, we are proud to say we make all of our bakery treats right in our own kitchen. Come in to the great smells of freshly baked cookies and see why we are one of the best bakeries in Chicagoland! All visiting dogs get to sample a piece of liver cake, our best-selling treat.

Happy Dog Barkery has been voted one of the Best Pet Bakeries for 4 years running in the Chicagoland Tails Readers Choice Awards.

Happy Dog Barkery was also voted the Best Pet Boutique for 4 years running in the West Suburban Living Magazine Best of the West contest.

Bakery FAQ's:

What makes them “dog” cookies?

We like to think our cookies are not “dog” cookies, but treats that are safe for dogs to eat. We do not add any sugar, salt, butter, etc. Our recipes are based on ingredients that are found in the dogs regular diet, or to add a little “something” to their diet. Dogs like to have variety in their diet and feeding them different flavored treats keeps them interested.

What flavor will my (insert breed) like?

None of our treats are made for any particular breed. It depends on your dog’s tastes. The top three flavors are liver, peanut butter and bacon.

What treats are good for my young puppy or sensitive stomach?

Our Oatmeal Treats are recommended for young dogs and those with sensitive stomachs. Oatmeal is a natural calming ingredient for the system and the cookie is an overall plain treat that normally doesn’t cause any problem. Oatmeal is also easy to crumble for dogs with teeth that may not be very strong.

What is that coating on the treats? I thought chocolate wasn’t safe for dogs?

We use carob chips and yogurt chips on our treats. Carob is a chocolate substitute that is safe for dogs. The yogurt chips may have some food coloring added. This is the only case where we use any artificial colors.

Other bakeries cover their entire treat in yogurt, why do you just outline yours?

Since yogurt and carob do contain sugar, we try to limit the amount of coating we use on the treats. Personally we don’t want our dogs to consume that much sugar and we don’t want our customers to either.

Why do you use whole wheat flour, unbleached white flour or corn meal in some of your treats but don’t recommend dog foods made with those ingredients?

We use flours that are meant for the human baking industry, meaning they are in their whole form. In most foods that contain wheat or corn, they use grain fragments and grains that are by-products of the processing for human consumption. We use the same flours you would put in your bread, crackers or cookies.

We feel that while grains aren’t necessarily are requirement in the dog’s diet, it is the quality of the grains that make the difference. We do offer treats that are wheat/corn free and some even grain free. Also, treats should be less than 10% of the dog’s diet and the amount of grain is within that limit.

Why do you call your treats natural?

All our ingredients are found in the grocery store or club store or a restaurant supply store. Nothing comes from the pet food industry or is labeled “for pet consumption only”.

Also, we use the natural form of the ingredients. Items such as natural peanut butter with no added salt/sugar or natural applesauce again with no added salt/sugar. This is an important distinction you don't see listed on some other bakeries ingredients.

Are your treats organic?

A few of the ingredients we use are organic, but we have no fully organic treats at this time.

Will you customize treats?

YES! We will customize decorated treats for you. We can discuss what you have in mind and work together for a finished product.
